skype lesson on biology physics chemistry
Hi. I am a freelance teacher, offering online tutoring via Skype. I am also available to meet in person with students who can meet me in colombo Sri lanka. I record all sessions and make them publicly available on YouTube. For recordings of previous sessions,
I offer academic tutoring in the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Physiology Anatomy.
I also offer “pre-course tutoring” during the summer or winter break to help students prepare for upcoming courses.
My fee for spring, 2017, is 500/= hour. I do not offer any discounts.
I charge by the hour, not by the person. This means that I charge the same total fee regardless of how many students participate in each session, so that you can participate in a session along with other students and split the 700/=hour fee with them. For example, the charge for a meeting with two students would be 3500/=hour for each student; the charge for a meeting with three students would be 2500/= hour for each student; etc. As many students as you like can participate in each session, whether the session is in-person or online. For Skype sessions with multiple students, it is fine for each student to be using a different computer.
Each session is two hours long.
I do not give direct assistance with specific problems from course homework assignments, lab reports, or class projects. Instead, I cover concepts and problem-solving techniques so that the student can complete assignments on their own.
I work only with students who have ample time to study between tutoring sessions. After each session, the student is expected to carefully review their notes from that session. In addition, after each session the student should make FACT SHEETS for the material covered in that session; the student should review these FACT SHEETS daily. (We will discuss how to use the FACT SHEETS program during the tutoring.) In addition, I may assign “homework” problems to the student after each session; the student is expected to carefully and thoughtfully complete these problems before the next session. At the beginning of each session, I will review the student’s work on the homework problems. We will not move on to new material until the student has demonstrated mastery of the material in the homework.
My tutoring approach is slow and methodical. Why are the tutoring sessions slow paced?
1. Students generally come to me because they have been unable to learn the material satisfactorily from their course lectures and textbooks. The key reason is that lectures and textbooks provide a brief overview of the material, but what most students require to learn the material is a slow, methodical, systematic presentation of each concept and problem-solving technique, followed by careful practice and reinforcement of each new idea or technique. This takes a lot of time.
2. My goal for academic tutoring is to (a) help the student achieve a better grade in the course, by (b) helping the student to understand and master the material. I do not offer quick or mechanical “tricks” that will allow the student to “fake” their way to a better grade without actual understanding of the material. The tutoring takes a lot of time because understanding and mastery take a lot of time.
We will not rush to make sure we “cover” all the course topics; instead, we will move at a slow and methodical pace, focusing on understanding and mastery of the topics there is time for us to cover carefully, rather than rushing to provide a brief overview of all topics.
I record all sessions and make them publicly available on YouTube. For recordings of previous sessions, click here.
For Skype tutoring, you will need a digital drawing tablet, such as this one, to use when we are working on practice problems, so that I can see your work on the problems during the sessions and so that this work can be included in the videos. If you like, you can wait until after our first session to purchase a tablet.
For in-person tutoring, when we are working on practice problems, the student will use a digital drawing tablet (provided by me), so that this work can be included in the video. After the session, I will send the student a printable document containing this work for the student’s notes.
My availability can fluctuate suddenly and unpredictably. I cannot give advance notice for when I will be unavailable. I do not guarantee availability and may become temporarily or permanently unavailable, without advance notice, at any time.
